Step 1: open the scan in Photoshop.

Step 2: check the Image Mode.
RGB for colored scans.
Grayscale for everything else.

Step 3: rotate the scan using the Ruler Tool.
Go to Image > Image Rotation > Arbitrary.

Step 4: crop the rotated scan using the Crop Tool.

Step 5: resize the scan. Make sure the height is 1200px. After resizing, save the scan as .PSD.

Step 6: level the scan.
Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels.

Step 7: clean the scan. Use the Brush Tool to get rid of dirt spots. Also check black areas for leftover pixels.

Step 8: brush out bubbles and redraw missing areas, the lines underneath the sound effect and the pattern in the bubble.

Step 9: typeset the scan. Use the Horizontal Type Tool. Add a 3px white Stroke where necessary and treat symbols (e.g. hearts) like letters.

Step 10: save the scan as .png.
Go to File > Save for Web & Devices. Colored scans are saved as .jpeg (quality: 10).
